Output characterisation | |
OUTPUT SENTENCE | Development and validation of methods for integrated assessment of ecological status of rivers and lakes to support river basin management plans |
OUTPUT TYPE | guidelines |
WATER TOPIC | Quality of natural systems |
KEYWORDS | Management process, quality of natural ecosystem, improving status of aquatic ecosystems, |
KEYWORDS TYPE | Guidelines |
MARKET NEED TAILORED | The assessment of the ecological status of waters involves many difficulties, since there are no national methods to date which would refer to type-specific reference values in accordance with the WFD. The output is a base for “Guidelines for integrated ecological status assessment of rivers and lakes to support river basin management plans” |
OUTPUT DESCRIPTION | Methodology for ecological status assessment of rivers and lakes in order to improve monitoring programs for surface waters. It recommends the rules for integrating different metrics within and across biological elements into one final assessment result and indicates the rules for quantifying the uncertainty and assessing the risk of misclassification. |
STATE OF DEVELOPMENT | Finished at 30.06.2011 One monograph published (Polish and English summary). Several publications in press. |
INNOVATIVE ASPECTS AND ADVANTAGES | The output is a result of new indices (metrics) tests and integration of “partial” assessments into one summary. Integrated WFD compliant ecological status assessment of lakes and river stretches in a demonstration river catchment was conducted (all biological quality elements - BQEs - and supporting elements included). Selected sources of uncertainty related to BQEs were estimated. Different BQEs integration principles for final water body assessment were tested. |
INTELLECTUAL/INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY RIGHTS | Project was carried out by the consortium of 5 Polish scientific institutions: Institute of Environmental Protection, Inland Fisheries Institute, Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, Pozna University of Life Sciences, Warmia and Mazury University |
POTENTIAL USERS/CLIENTS | • river basin managers (the Regional Water Management Authorities and the National Water Management Authority) • regional monitoring lakes and rivers services (the Regional Inspectorates for Environmental Protection and the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection) will be the main end-users of the results of this project. |
