Hydrochip
Output characterisation | |
OUTPUT SENTENCE | The Hydrochip: a reliable and quick way to test water quality. |
OUTPUT TYPE | prototype |
WATER TOPIC | Quality of natural systems |
KEYWORDS | water quality improvement‚ monitoring system‚ water monitoring |
MARKET NEED TAILORED | Need to analyze composition of the phytobenthos and phytoplankton due to the WFD (water framework directive). The current methods are rather laborious. |
OUTPUT DESCRIPTION | A new measuring device called Hydrochip, which will provide an opportunity to monitor the implementation of the WFD with regard to the ecological parameters phytobenthos and phytoplankton in an innovative way. STATE OF DEVELOPMENT | The Hydrochip already exists, but needs to be thoroughly tested, and proven to be reliable, whether wuantatively or qualitatively. |
INNOVATIVE ASPECTS AND ADVANTAGES | This device allows for a much simpler method of operation to measure phytoplankton and phytobenthos, compared to current methods. |
INTELLECTUAL/INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY RIGHTS | TNO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor toegepast-natuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek) |
TRANSFERABILITY | Hopefully, the Hydrochip technology, will be adaptable to other water bodies, in addition to the Netherlands' ones on which it will be tested. |
POTENTIAL USERS/CLIENTS | Local authorities, monitoring firms, consultancy offices working on public contracts for local authorities |
Estimation of risks | |
INNOVATIVE DISADVANTAGE | This technology is currently not tested and approved. |
EVALUATION OF RISKS FOR OUTPUT USERS | Current risks, except on the social aspect, are unknown, as the Huydrochip device hasn't been tested. The DNA chip technology has been used in other countries for other purposes, so on a market point of view, there could be a competitive aspect arising. |
ECONOMICAL RISKS | Unknown |
TECHNICAL RISKS | Unknown |
MARKET RISKS | Low risk |
SOCIAL RISKS | Absence of risk |
Steps ahead | |
NEXT STEPS TO ACHIEVE THE STATUS 'READY TO USE' |
- Demonstrate that Hydrochip can be used to reliably, quantitatively and efficiently determine ecological water quality in a high throughput fashion by using molecular biomarkers to determine phytobenthos (diatoms) and phytoplankton (cyanobacteria).
