MARKET NEED TAILORED

The project team made a marketing study showing that 10% of the drinking water plants in France producing 50% of the drinking water volumes could be equipped. The study is focussed towards municipaly operated stations.

OUTPUT DESCRIPTION

Water treatment process applied to drinking water production that allows in situ generation of coagulant. This process is based on processes used in industry to treat industrial wastewaters and has developed a treatment technique using electrocoagulation. The process is applied to a coagulation step in the drinking water production. See scheme provided by Geneviève Feuillade, Unilim/ENSIL

STATE OF DEVELOPMENT

Laboratory pilot ok. Next steps are : on site tests with an industrial pilot and on different existing plants to test with different water qualities and composition à agreement with Limoges, and with SAUR on a small plant

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS AND ADVANTAGES

introduction of an additional step in the treatment chain ; the process can use the recirculation of treated water.

Innovation : it is mainly on the way the implementation of the process is done, not the process itself. On site coagulant production, (replaces coagulant storage)

Advantage : no reagent storage, interesting in warm countries where reagent transport/storage is difficult. Self regulation of the pH : this process allows avoiding acidification.

It increase sludge dryness and the absence of reagent limits health risks with the organic matter going out of the plant. It requires low space, is easy to use, maintain and manage, with low cost and is particularly adapted for small plants, especially in southern countries and islands.

INTELLECTUAL/INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

Patent claim via AVRUL.

Intellectual property right : 3 inventors for Limoges University, GRESE (Geneviève Feuillade, Virginie Pallier, Emilie Champagnac). industrial property right : licencing possible with University (GRESE), which is not linked to a private company or State

TRANSFERABILITY

Easy to transfer to other regions (to be completed)

POTENTIAL USERS/CLIENTS

Small wastewater treatment plants, rural areas, islands…

BUSINNESS CASEYes
 Estimation of risks
INNOVATIVE DISADVANTAGE

Needs electricity.

Efficiency of the process :

balance made on coagulation flocullation sedimentation : efficiency lower than classical reagant injection

Balance made on coagulation flocullation sedimentation and filtration : same efficiency for both processes.

Need for a ions addition for low mineralised waters.

EVALUATION OF RISKS FOR OUTPUT USERS

No risk

ECONOMICAL RISKSNo risk, low cost process
TECHNICAL RISKSNo risk, the process uses a simple and easy to use technology, it requires low maintenance and low training for getting started.
MARKET RISKSVeolia works on this topic, risktravaille sur ce sujet, high level of competition ?
SOCIAL RISKSNo acceptability problem
 Steps ahead
NEXT STEPS TO ACHIEVE THE STATUS 'READY TO USE'

Building of the pilot (production drawing), Find a project backer (incubator or other…). Ask for an process agreement by the Health ministry: planned after in situ testing. Necessary forecasted timing to finish all steps (patent, agreement, in situ test) : max end 2013

INVOLVEMENT OF THE OWNER FOR THE NEXT STEPSFinalisation of the process, then Commercial agreement. Technical support possible, technical advisor
TYPE OF PARTNER FOR THE NEXT DEVELOPMENTSA project manager with masters degree, drinking water treatment education, new entrepreneur or development company, equipment supplier to develop its activity
TASKS TO BE PERFORMED

Industrialisation

COLLABORATION DETAILS

Equipment supplier, study bureau for marketing

 Estimation of ressources
RESOURCES FOR NEXT STEPS

An implementer that will make the in situ tests and will market the output

FORESEEN COSTS FOR NEXT STEPS

Low costs to finalise the process (low investment cost + one full time person for a year)
