Wired trees

 Output characterisation
OUTPUT SENTENCE

Setting  fallen or cutted trees with steel cable in river banks.

OUTPUT TYPEmethodology
WATER TOPICQuality of natural systems
KEYWORDSWired trees
KEYWORDS TYPEUpgrading of ecological diversity
MARKET NEED TAILORED

This methodology/technic will solve problems of lack of ecological  diversity in plain rivers. It will help to avoid removal of fallen trees from rivers. Fallen or cutted trees will fill river pits.

OUTPUT DESCRIPTION

Fallen trees in the river are fixed with cables and emerged parts cutted to minimize jams. These trees are located in or near pits along the shore. They bring to the fish fauna area caches, food and support to some species for reproduction. For some fish, it is a nesting support.

STATE OF DEVELOPMENT

Manies wired trees (more than 40) have been fixed in the Clain Sud watershed since 2007. It's time to export technology to other areas with plain rivers or with weak ecological diversity rivers.

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS AND ADVANTAGES

Simple technology at low cost. Ecological diversity will upgrade with this method.

INTELLECTUAL/INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

Resolving local problems, river engineer in charge of the Clain want to make other diffusion levels of this technology by using Internet for example. No problems with intellectual or property rights.

TRANSFERABILITY

This technology can be implemented in many regions of european countries with similar problems (lack of habitat diversity).

POTENTIAL USERS/CLIENTS

Plain and low diversity rivers managers across EU.

BUSINNESS CASEYes
 Estimation of risks
INNOVATIVE DISADVANTAGE

Investment in time (for technology installation). Technology limited to low diversity and plain rivers for the moment. Trees used must be hardwood and pemanently covered by water.

EVALUATION OF RISKS FOR OUTPUT USERS

Modification in the river dynamic must be checked. For that, no more than 1/3 of the river must be occupied by trees.

ECONOMICAL RISKSLow risks
TECHNICAL RISKSLow risks
MARKET RISKSNo risks
SOCIAL RISKSResidents must be convinced of the necessity of these actions
 Steps ahead
NEXT STEPS TO ACHIEVE THE STATUS 'READY TO USE'

Dissemination through rivers managers structures (associations, federations,...). Communication must be upgraded.

INVOLVEMENT OF THE OWNER FOR THE NEXT STEPSFully available for dissemination, awaiting feedbacks from future users in other situations.
TYPE OF PARTNER FOR THE NEXT DEVELOPMENTSOpen to other rivers syndicates, fishing federations, rivers management structures, national organizations in charge of rivers
TASKS TO BE PERFORMED

Development of user's guide, post monitoring, implementation methods, recommendations, feedback observations.

COLLABORATION DETAILS

To reach a "ready to use" level, agreement with national authorities in charge of rivers must be concluded.

 Estimation of ressources
RESOURCES FOR NEXT STEPS

User's guide writing will need time and work, but clain watershed river engineer is available to do it. Also available for dissemination, communication,... Clain engineer will update local website before the end of the year to address new targets: everyone knowing few or nothing on the subject and specialists.

FORESEEN COSTS FOR NEXT STEPS

No foreseen costs.
