MARKET NEED TAILORED

The need of an integrated water management requires the consideration of surface and groundwater as a whole along with the implication of all involved factors (physics, social and economics).

The studies focussed on water resources distribution in terms of qualitative and quantitative aspects by means of using numerical models (i.e. AQUATOOLDMA). Thus an improvement on SIGMES incorporation (module for integrated basin management) is required. SMAA allows the incorporation of required aquifer values after running a distributed simulation. This routine integrates the management of surface and underground water resources.

OUTPUT DESCRIPTION

New modelling software of aquifer details that allows water managers to easily identify the quantities of groundwater masses without using sophisticated modeling tools.

STATE OF DEVELOPMENT

The calculation routine, is partially implemented in SMAA, it still needs new functionalities. However Spanish river basin organisations have expressed their interested to these results. Promotion of the output at national level is being successfully ach

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS AND ADVANTAGES

Innovative approaches in nowadays groundwater modelling. SMAA offers an intuitive, easy and quick way to incorporate the required aquifer parameters by the basin model (SIMGES de AQUATOOL-DMA) trough a distributed simulation. This function facilitates the integrated water resources management. Two main advantages. Related to calculation routine: This method offers important advantages in simulations adjust and characterization as the results calculation time is reduced. Moreover, the explicit simulation of multiple alternatives for long simulation periods is incorporated. Related to models: It is a very simple and agile tool to model aquifers using a distributed approach. It is allowed to fix temporal series with different simulation scenarios (following WFD requirements) and to carry out related simulations.

NEXT STEPS TO ACHIEVE THE STATUS 'READY TO USE'

Regarding the calculation module, it needs:

  • Problem formulation in finite elements models.
  • To control and implement significant water levels variations that could considerably affect cells transmissivity.
  • Checking and automatic simulation of aquifer

RESOURCES FOR NEXT STEPS

Economic resources to finalise the tool and add new functionalities to the calculation model are estimated in approx. 150.000 €.

Expected time to finalise the research: 18 MONTHS.
