GREENLYSIS
Output characterisation | |
OUTPUT SENTENCE | Production of hydrogen and oxygen with treated waste water. Oxygen for the biologic treatment and hydrogen for fuel |
OUTPUT TYPE | prototype |
WATER TOPIC | Urban pollution |
KEYWORDS | Technology process, energy saving, fuel production, use of renewable energy |
MARKET NEED TAILORED | Energy saving, H2 fuel production for vehicle and energy generators, O2 production for activated sludge in the biological treatment |
OUTPUT DESCRIPTION | Process to produce Oxygen for biological WWT and hydrogen for vehicles |
STATE OF DEVELOPMENT |
Ready to use, A pilot plant has being created in the WWTP of Montornes in Spain to do the experimentations. It is being dismantled due to space availability. |
INNOVATIVE ASPECTS AND ADVANTAGES | Electrolysis of treated water to produce hydrogen and oxygen. The use of renewable energy to produce H2 and O2. The management of energy including renewable energy, energy saving, energy production. |
INTELLECTUAL/INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY RIGHTS | The association of various water treatments is innovative but it seems that no licence has been deposed. The technical publications have been done in November 2012.
Actually Agbar Group is involved in the “technology and knowledge transfer” |
TRANSFERABILITY |
Possible to transfer the output on other territories( Europeans countries) |
POTENTIAL USERS/CLIENTS | Water utilities, Other researchers, big Industries,Local authorities, administrative officials, scientists, political and community leaders |
BUSINNESS CASE | Yes |
Estimation of risks | |
INNOVATIVE DISADVANTAGE | H2 used as fuel in transport vehicles , the market is not ready to change petrol to H2 |
EVALUATION OF RISKS FOR OUTPUT USERS |
Low risk but the Hydrogen market is not enough developed in 2013 |
ECONOMICAL RISKS | Depends on the real price of energy (electricity, petrol,…). The hydrogen is not really used actually. The real price of the process is not actually known |
TECHNICAL RISKS | Quite complex process to electrolyse purified water |
MARKET RISKS | What about the evolution of Hydrogen market |
SOCIAL RISKS | No social risks |
Steps ahead | |
NEXT STEPS TO ACHIEVE THE STATUS 'READY TO USE' | Experimentation in a real waste water plant |
INVOLVEMENT OF THE OWNER FOR THE NEXT STEPS | Partnership with AGBAR Group (http://www.agbar.com/es) |
TYPE OF PARTNER FOR THE NEXT DEVELOPMENTS | AGBAR Group |
TASKS TO BE PERFORMED | Experimentation on a bigger size, in real scale for autonomous energy supply on a WWTP |

Background | |
PROJECT NAME | GREENLYSIS – HYDROGEN AND OXYGEN PRODUCTION IN WASTE WATER PLANT |
PROJECT ACRONYM | GREENLYSIS |
PROJECT DESCRIPTION | The treated water of a WWTP is disinfected and treated (Ultra filtration process+ UV disinfection + purified by membrane distillation) to be electrolysed and supplied by renewable electrical energy (solar and wind). The Electrolysis of this water produces oxygen to improve biologic treatment and hydrogen to produce fuel and. The project consist in the balance between energy consumption and energy production to reduce the GHG of the process of WWTP |
LEADER | SPAIN – CETaqua, |
TEAMS INVOLVED | SUEZ Circee (France), Saft baterias (Spain) |
COUNTRIES INVOLVED | SPAIN - FRANCE |
PROJECT LOCATION | Spain, Waste Water treatment plant of Montornès del Vallès (Barcelona) |
FUNDING ORGANISATION | European union |
